New York Attorney General Targets Supplements at Major Retailers

This article is from 2015 but I think it is still relevant today.

Quote from the article:

“[A]uthorities said they had conducted tests on top-selling store brands of herbal supplements at four national retailers — GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart — and found that four out of five of the products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels.”

When people ask why I sell supplements in my clinic, this is a major reason why…because the supplements I carry are from companies that I trust and know have carried out testing to ensure the supplements contain what they are supposed to contain and nothing else.

When people say supplements don’t work, my first questions is always: “Where did you buy your supplements?”

Bottom line: Quality matters when it comes to supplements.

Here are the top 3 reasons why supplements don’t work for people

The number one reason why supplements don’t work for people is that they are using inferior store-bought products. These products either do not contain the advertised dosage or sometimes they don’t even contain the right ingredients!

The number two reason is that they are not using therapeutic dosages of the supplements. For example, therapeutic dosages of fish oil should be in the 2-4 grams per day range, but most people take 500-1000 mg and then wonder why they don’t feel any changes (also it usually takes longer for supplements to “work”).

The number three reason is that they are not incorporating nutrition and other lifestyle changes along with the supplements. Remember you can never supplement your way out of bad nutrition and lifestyle choices. Supplements are supposed to help “supplement” your nutrition choices, they are not meant to overcome poor nutrition choices.

Thanks for reading my rant and feel free to message me if you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them.
